Opera with RSS
OPERA -- Release 7.5 from Opera Software incorporates RSS feeds which means operating fewer open Windows in my case. I paid €34 for the Windows version for several reasons including its ability to read RSS newsfeeds. To subscribe to a feed, you use Opera Mail to select “newsfeeds” then populate your feed from there. Alternatively, you can use Opera's navigation bar while surfing to automatically recognize embedded newsfeed links and display a "Newsfeed" button.
I watch 100 blogs with Opera. The newsfeed reader is integrated into the Opera mail client, in much the same way as Usenet news. There’s a new section called Newsfeeds where all the RSS feeds you’ve subscribed to appear. The Opera newsfeed reader brings me headlines from different newspapers, blogs and some newsletters too. This is handy because I often spend time on dial-up connections and would not like to return to the worldwide wait that I remember before broadband.
The news items appear as news stories in a list -- click on one of these and the item will open, including any summary that the feed’s author has included, and you’re presented with a link to the full story. Unlike many other RSS readers, where a style (often including some graphics) is usually applied to a feed, this appears simply as list of items. The advantage of this approach is that old items that may have disappeared from the feed are still available in Opera.
In actual practise, the Opera newsfeeder remembers items I’ve marked as “read” more reliably than Newzcrawler. On my XP Pro installation, new feeds bubble up from the start button as they arrive. I like the sense of compactness of the Opera newsfeeder but also find the image management a big benefit in my Newzcrawler. Consquently, I use the two newsfeeders.
