We the media

We the mediaOREILLY -- Dan Gillmor's We the Media launched last week in Silicon Valley and I think our multimedia skunk works project team needs to read one of the chapters as an MP3. I'll track back to Niall Kennedy's initiative and see what happens.

I also wonder if Gillmor covers "counter-Googling." In one of his early drafts, Gillmor discussed how Google is used to cross-check sources and stories. It's not obvious from the Table of Contents whether he's covered the idea and it's not cited in the Index. Gotta buy the book and see for myself even though I'm paying more for DHL shipping through the O'Reilly web store than for the book itself.

I'm a daily reader of Dan Gillmor's weblog because he puts himself in the middle of technology reporting--alongside the sludge of spam and the pain of comment flamewars. He makes measured comments about how technology is altering journalism. Regular blog readers would know the storyline before opening the book because Gillmor has been writing it online with live reviews from participants. That fact alone suggests the democratisation of information is a procedure worth emulating in modern democracies. To understand it better, I'm using the book in the Online Journalism course that I teach. Gillmor's insights gives my students a glance at things to come.
