I will be creating a multimedia project that will involve, post-producing, streaming, serving and archiving MP3 files from a Tipperary Institute server.

The server need not be a streaming server. The functionality of the project will be:

(1) To record MP3 streams of: class Q&A (will serve students before exams to listen to valuable material) snippets from INBITE guest speakers, comments by guest lecturers and pre-packed audio revision sessions from three separate TippInst courses.

(2) MP3 files served as RSS enclosures.

(3) MP3 files received on this project playing on an iPod.

(4) Selected MP3 files which will be offered for sale, using a basic shopping cart coded by myself.

(5) Write and get consent forms checked for each recorded student/quest speaker to complete before recording takes place. The core functionality can be purchased for less than EUR45.

This project borrows from technology demonstrated by lawyer Lawrence Lessig (www.creativecomnons.org) and MTV VJ Adam Curry (live.curry.com) According to Bernie we have the MP3 script and the RSS enclosure code in a "podcasting sandbox."

The project wii also produce a CD, with jewelbox cover, CD label, brochure, and press release.

The project must ensure it does not lock down all deliverables into an iPod-specific platform. Podcasting is merely a form of audioblogging. It shifts content smoothly and has some automated downloading features using ipodder.

The next generation of mobile phones, chock-full of memory and better speakers, could easily trump iPods. This is Motorola's vision--on-demand streaming service to 3G phones. Why bother copying music to your iPod when your phone can download your playlist at night, either over Bluetooth or with network technologies?

Podcasting heralds a time when people will plug into their mobile phones to listen to personal audio tracks saved on 512MB memory cards. Or they'll pull their content via 3G streaming service. This project must acknowledge this eventuality.
