Irish artist Fintan Friel has real-world seasoning from venues in New York City and Melbourne, Australia. He has developed a street-wise sensibility, able to piggyback on other shows with complementary work of his own. One of his surprises involved placing A0 posters in an alley adjacent to a street art festival in Melbourne and then selling the posters. "I had the two magic words: New York. It went off on its own." Friel knows "it's kind of a joke--$10 for a piece of art" but thinks it's important to draw people into actually participating in community art and that "the purchase is part of the whole process."
The discussion continues as part of the Master of Arts in Visual Arts Practises at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology.
