Irish Examiner

The Irish Examiner ran this story on its front page (13 June 2005) with the sidebar question, "Can you understand this article?" Harry McGee write, "Yesterday, Irish was made an official language at European Union level meaning all key documents will be translated into Irish and up to 30 translators will be employed full time. It will cost the EU €3.5 million a year".

It's difficult to rationalise this kind of expense in a time when hospitals, roads and telecommunications infrastructures are killing people and commerce.
