Daft cafe bars
KILKENNY -- Straight-talking John McGuinness has described plans by Minister for Justice Michael McDowell to introduce cafe bars as a "daft notion". Even in the laneways of charming Kilkenny, cafe bars with outdoor drinking would not work. That's why no publican in the southeast is clamoring for them.
Any weekend in Kilkenny it is easy to see the effects of late-night drinking on the pavement. Every fortnight, reports in the Kilkenny people document the perpetual occurrence of anti-social behaviour on the heels of late night pubs and clubs. The more accesible drinking becomes in Ireland, the worse people's behaviour becomes.
Marie O'Halloran -- "Fianna Fáil TD critical of 'daft' cafe bars" in The IrishTimes, June 3, 2005.

McDowell's idea of that time was ingenious. John McGuinness opposed him as his son is a publican, as almost all publicans opposed McDowell's plan.
As a longstanding professional photographer in Kilkenny I thought that McDowell's cafe plan was just what was needed to liven up tourism here in Kilkenny, to make tourism enjoyable for the tourusts to see more out in the street than having to be stuck in a nondescript pub, and these pubs can be simply awful to the gaze inside with hastily cobbled-together "decor" and patchovers that you would not tolerate for a second in your own homes.
Here's my address and details if anybody wants to resurrect McDowell's Cafe Plan:

Photographers going bust all over the country ( nobody admitting it! ) due to:
1 Digital, clients now doing their own.
2. The recession.
Until the clients figure out that they can't produce professional quality themselves and the recession lifts, I would advise fellow photographers not getting business these days to:
1. Don't invest in any more equipment, just maintain what you already have.
2. Get another line going as well as photography
3. If you're doing nothing at all best find a proper job:-) Luckily I'm still doing OK and can sit it out commfortably.
All the best,
Michael.
