Reshaping education with technology

 

Technology has a large impact on all forms of education and as technology advances it is important for the education institution to grow and adjust with the new technology. In this blog I will discuses some possible changes to second level education in order to take advantage of emergent technologies.

 

Virtual reality 

With rapid improvements in virtual reality(vr) technology I believe that schools should prepare to make use of it in certain subjects for example Biology classes would benefit greatly from having vr technology implemented into the class. Rather then students looking at diagram of a human skeleton, muscles or other organs students would be able to interact with a virtual mock up and would be able get close to the muscles and move the models limbs seeing in greater detail how they work and interact with each other.

Construction studies would benefit from vr by teacher having the ability to show students digital model houses that could be disassembled or interactive videos that  allow students to see how the foundation was made and how the walls and insulation were installed.

In a similar vain to biology, agricultural science would have similar benefits from vr except that instead of a human model the virtual model would be an animal this combined with some interactive videos would effectively turn the subject into a pseudo-practical subject. 

Lastly geography would also benefit from virtual reality. While this subject would get the least use out of virtual reality out of the mentioned subjects it would benefit from interactive videos and thanks to virtual reality it would be for students to have a more hands on experience with the subject.

Virtual reality is a new major technology that has the possibility to drastically reshape the way we learn things and I believe it would be a poor choice for the education industry to not take advantage of it.    

What is Makermeet

Makermeet is a a group of people who enjoy science, tech, arts, DIY and any thing practical. they aim to teach people how to make stuff and how to improve there practical skills. Skills which they believe are not prioritized enough nor thought correctly.

Makermeet Ireland has partnered with Kerry Architecture and will be holding a number of practical workshops at Kerry Architecture  2022 some of these workshops include construction of a number of Geodesic Domes (both small and very large), making a model town and making things with card board. While these will be present at Kerry Architecture 2022 you are also able to hire out a series of different workshops. These range from origami to coding, carpentry to stop motion. Teachers are also able to get advice on practical project/ideas and where to get materials for them.
