KILKENNY -- I need to modify my front page and remove the direct link from short comments. Spammers like front page prominence on blogs that attract Googlebot several times a day. Removing the comment summaries reduces the appeal of this blog in the eyes of comment spammers. I need to make this change because after one year of using Typepad, I'm blocking more comment spammers (360) than the total number of comments made on this blog (354). So I'm erasing any mention of commentators from the front page of this Weblog to see if that affects the frequency of unwelcome comments.
Update 17 May 2004. For the first time this year, I have gone more than 24 hours during the week without a spammer leeching onto my comments. The acid test is to see if this can continue for a full work week.
Update 17 June 2004. I cannot get through a week without dealing with comment spam. It normally comes from dial-up leeches in Germany. It feels as though Six Apart are blocking spammers with fixed IP addresses because I no longer have to delete and block 10 different IP addresses a day. I know those spammers are out there but they're not showing up here.
Update 10 April 2005. I reintroduced comments on reader request. The blocklist used by Six Apart is controlling the flow of comment spam because fewer than four spammers get through for every 10,000 pages served.
