IT TAKES TIME to explain how a back channel works and then to train college students to intelligently contribute to it. We started the academic year with a small group of creative multimedia students from Tipperary Institute. The students attended an event co-presented by the Irish Internet Association and the South Tipperary County Council. If you're willing to wade through some misfired text strings, you can see the main points arising during the three presentations by flicking back at educast.jaiku.com (at left). We use these back channel text strings to revisit testable events and to construct podcasts of industry activities. The Jaiku back channel helps lecturers to structure review sessions around major themes observed and major items missed. Media Studies students who attended the enterprise seminar, along with students who contribute to the Jaiku text streams, will produce an abbreviated podcast about the event. The shownotes begin by fleshing out the meat behind the Jaiku comments left by students.
