No Smoking in Ireland

No Smoking in Ireland

Aboard Irish Rail

Ireland's restriction against smoking brings with it a fine and a threat to close the offiensive premises. So people are outside where it's often freezing cold. Some jump off their trains for a quick puff when they know their carriages will be idle awaiting line clearance.

When the smoking ban kicked in, so did a noticeable amount of odours. You can smell the farts that used to hide under a blanket of smoke.

It's sometimes seen as a passage of time. For years, old age pensioners successfully lobbied the government for an increase in their weekly stipend as the cost of tobacco increased. Now people may feel sorry for the elderly on two accounts. One, they cannot get their smokes without paying a much more than ever before. Two, the cost of cigarettes is no longer subsidised as part of a shopping basket.
