I first encountered the wry and perceptive Gerard Byrne in the Project in Temple Bar (2004) and then in the Green on Red in Dublin. Gerry works mainy with photographic and video. His work complicates the expectations of audiences by encouraging them to experience spaces differently. In the case of the Project in 2004, Byrne painted the white cube into a black box and injected theatrical elements of backdrops and lighting. The effect created an illusion.
